The Green Schools Project is a school-led initiative that seeks to promote sustainable actions that enhance natural resources management and environmental sustainability. It includes a strategic combination of environmental protection & conservation, agricultural land management, renewable energy, sports and community-led adaptative livelihood initiatives.

The project is an initiative of African Center for Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development and Zenaga Foundation GmbH with funding support from Sports For Future e.V and other partners. It started in the year 2020, Akwa Ibom being a coastal state in Nigeria with an increases risks factors of climate change impacts was selected for pilot project implementation.

Five years on, the project has foster environmental stewardship among students by integrating sustainability into the educational environment, creating eco-friendly schools, promoting sustainable practices, as well as providing environmental education to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious citizens.

Giving the successful implementation of the Project in Akwa Ibom State and its important role in climate resilient actions in Nigeria, the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Environment has constituted the National Implementation Committee for Green Schools Project for the purpose of scaling up the implementation in the country.
